The History of The Credit Union
Credit unions have been providing cooperative financial services for more than 150 years. The credit union idea developed in Germany in the 1840’s and spread to North America at the beginning of this century. St. Mary’s Bank, the first credit union in the United States, was organized in 1908 in New Hampshire.
On February 4, 1934, approval was given to the following charter members to organize a credit union to be named K.C. Policemen’s Credit Union: Thomas J. Sullivan, Charles P. Humphrey, P.J. Neilson, T.J. Higgins, M.J. Kennedy, Robert J. Coffey, C.W. Shepard, John J. Regan, William M. Boyd and Roy O. Prather.
- 1952 - Marie Brown (Ma Brown) was employed as Treasurer/Manager
- 1960 - Credit Union reached $1 million in assets.
- 1967 - Herman Davis retires after 22 years of service as president.
- 1969 - Marie Brown retires after 17 years of service. Elizabeth Strecker becomes Treasurer/Manager.
- 1981 - Norma Lamp becomes Treasurer/Manager. IRA and Deferred Compensation Plan offered to membership.
- 1986 - Philip M. Weber joins the Credit Union as President/Manager.
- 1987 - Visa card added to Credit Union services.
- 1988 - Real estate lending program developed.
- 1989 - Certificates of Deposit and Checking Programs launched.
- 1990 - Name changed to K.C. Police Credit Union.
- 1994 - Credit Union branch added in KCPD Headquarters Building.
- 1995 - ATM card access offered.
- 1997 - Credit Union has $63 million in assets and 19 employees.
- 1998 - K.C. Police Credit Union joins the World Wide Web, at www.kcpcu.org.
- 1999 - The credit union moved across the street to 2800 E 14th Street.
- 2000 - Internet Banking and Bill Payment Service available.
- 2001 - Field of Membership expanded to included all law enforcement in Missouri and Eastern Kansas.
- 2004 - KCPCU celebrates its 70th anniversary by opening a new and larger facility in the KCPD Headquarters building at 1125 Locust.
- 2005 - KCPCU adds Money Market accounts and Platinum Visa Cards to its list of services
- 2006 - KCPCU opens its newest branch at the Northglen Shopping Center at 152 Highway and North Brighton.
